"I DO HAVE A LEFT BRAIN AND A RIGHT BRAIN. I HAVE A CREATIVE SIDE AND I HAVE A BUSINESS, ANALYTICAL SIDE."
-FRANK NORTON JR
Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid or paste is then applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are often used.
While largely self taught, Norton studied color graphics and design in high school and college but his talents lay dormant for almost 20 years. Only after taking up the markers to decorate his children's brown paper lunch bags , did the feathered friends emerge. Norton explores his latin heritage, mountains, seashore and lake shoreline for inspiration. Part folk art, part cartoon, part modern art, Norton calls these simple portraits "Chick' in Scratches."
It all started as a way to spruce up his children's lunches. "I got in the habit of making their lunches and brown paper bags just didn't look very good so I had some crayons one day and I just started to draw on them." -FKNJR
